5 Line Recap – Time Spiral ep 8 + review

time spiral

Final episode!

5-line Recap

  1. Kentaro lectures Tatsumi about not giving up, since faith can change fate.
  2. The main professor, who only shows up to discuss time travel, showed up to talk about time travel with Natsuki and Tatsumi.
  3. Tatsumi and Natsuki kiss before he goes back to his own time – speaking of the kiss, it really looks really awkward, like he’s trying to eat her face or something.
  4. Tatsumi is back in his own time and Mami is alive; she’s also marired to Kentaro.
  5. Natsuki is also alive, but she doesn’t know who Tatsumi is…..only she does.

I guess this is the end. Only eight episodes, so it was short and sweet. The episode was mostly about Natsuki trying to convince Tatsumi to go back in the past and not save her. Her reasoning for this is that if he doesn’t go back and let things happen organically, then only him and Mami will suffer in the end.  She does make a good point here. The time travel business is clearly having a toll on Tatsumi and Mami keeps dying, so if Natsuki dies then two people will live on.

Her reasons made me feel like a bad person though, because I would probably tell Tatsumi to do something different so that we all live in the end. I may want to save others, but not at the expense of my own life.

With the way things were going, I thought that at least someone would die in the end so I’m a bit surprised by the happy ending. There’s still a few plot holes that were never solved, but I suppose that’s how it usually is with time travel stories.

As a whole, I don’t think I really liked this drama all that much. Initially, I thought it started well and I liked how things were playing out. I am a fan of time traveling stories, so I was really looking forward to how it would be used here. At first, I was all for it, but things are never really explained. I don’t know how Tatsumi started to time travel. I don’t know why he was the only one who could use it. I don’t why Natsuki was the only one who had deja vu like experiences, even though the other characters were part of the two time lines.

Nothing is really explained and while that would annoy me a great deal, the main fault with Time Spiral doesn’t lie in the story. It’s the characters who fall short and make the experience quite lacklustre. I don’t know if this is due to the acting or the direction they were given, but everyone felt very distant and cold. They were just like dolls really. Everyone had the same expression for every situation and that never really changed.

This not only made the story feel off, but it also messed up the romance aspect of the show as well. Natsuki was with Kentaro and I guess they were dating long enough that he wanted to marry her, but the moment Tatsumi shows up it’s like Natsuki doesn’t like or care about Kentaro anymore. It was like she didn’t even like him. I just didn’t get that. When Tatsumi told her that he’s going to make her fall in love with him and drive a wedge between her and Kentaro, she just accepts it because he’s the man who saved her.

That’s fine, but at least show us that you cared about Kentaro.

Speaking of Kentaro, he’s only purpose was to be with Natsuki and then Mami. He served no real purpose except for being a prize. Ah sorry, he was more like a chess piece for Tatsumi to use in order to save Mami. But that’s it. I also don’t know why those thugs in the beginning were trying to go after his family.

Even Gackt started to check out as the show continued to go on.

I’ve seen these actors in other things before, so I know that they are all capable and great actors. It’s just that nothing worked here in terms of properly conveying emotion or anything really. Even in this episode when Natsuki and Tatsumi kiss, it didn’t feel like two characters who are completely in love with each other. This was a kiss of goodbye, so it’s meant to be sad, powerful, and passionate, but it just felt like two people who decided to kiss for some reason or another. I was more focused on the tongue action from Gackt and how a simple kiss could look like he was devouring Meisa’s face.

I felt bad for her lips. That’s not how a kiss of that nature should come across.

The only character that had some life to them was Natsuki mom, played by Kayoko Kishimoto. Everyone else just felt flat and lifeless.

I think Time Spiral started off strong, but it slowly fell apart as the show progressed. This is mainly due to the characters though and not so much the plot. Even though there are plot holes, I was still interested to see how the story unravels. This had so much potential, which is why I’m disappointed by how everything turned out. For me, the characters simply ruined the experience.
