tvN’s Valid Love episode 20 – Final Recap & Review

Final episode! So what do you think will happen? Seems like Kim Joon is out of the picture now, but will the bromance live to see another day? I hope so. As for Il Ri and Hee Tae, I don’t really mind it as long as it doesn’t happen right away. After the near death experiences, they need to work out their problems and take things slow before getting back together again. They’re still technically married right?

In any case, as long as things are not rushed and are properly developed then I’m fine with whatever happening. I don’t care if Il Ri ends up with Hee Tae, Kim Joon, or alone, it just needs to make sense and not feel like an afterthought.

With that said, here’s the final recap for Valid Love! Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read my blog and my recaps. I truly appreciate it 🙂 We may not agree, but it’s always fun seeing all of the different points of view about the show.

5-Line Recap:

1. Il Ri and Hee Tae talk to each other.

Show, don’t go into misunderstanding territory for your last episode. After twenty episodes of Hee Tae and Il Ri not talking to each other, please let them talk to each other as adults and not have any more secrets. Il Ri should tell him that she isn’t leaving with Kim Joon and that she’s alone. It doesn’t have to start up something between them, but still…

Hee Tae gives her the chair, but Il Ri doesn’t want it. Considering what she knows about it, it makes sense. He tells her that he felt sorry for her during their marriage and he mistaken that for love. She’s gets the feels, so she makes him dinner. They eat together. They cry together. They feel thankful and Il Ri stays the night.

Aww. Kim Joon may have lost his relationship with Il Ri, but at least he has Min Ki….if only it was Hee Tae 😦

tvN’s Valid Love episode 19 – Hee Soo

Second last episode! I don’t know how this will end, but I have a sneaky feeling that it will take place seven years in the future. It also may or may not be open-ended. I do hope that the show has these characters grow a bit, since I feel like everyone, minus Yi Ri and Ki Tae, are in the same place as the beginning of the series.

5-Line Recap:

1. Il Ri is saved by the neighbour who harassed her husband and is now fighting for her life, while Hee Tae is perfectly fine.

Who just walks away from someone who is having an asthma attack? I know some like to hate on Hee Tae, Kim Joon, and Il Ri, but that couple that just walked by before the neighbour got there are the real villains of this show. Who does that?

Anyways, Il Ri is in the hospital and both Hee Tae and Kim Joon feel something as they are reminded of Il Ri in their own ways, but nothing happens. Hee Tae arrives back and Soo Young ends up calling him to tell him about Il Ri’s condition.

This scene…kind of familiar isn’t it? Hee Tae left the last time this happened and judging by the previews he will again. Granted, the first time was for his dream and this time it’s probably going to be because he still thinks that Il Ri and Kim Joon are together and doesn’t want to get in the way of that.

tvN’s Valid Love episode 18 – Multiple Death Scares and a Break-up

Computer should be good to go now! And I have a bunch of animes on my backlog and some features that I’m currently working on. During my time not blogging, I’ve learned that I don’t know what to do with my time lol.

Anyways, here’s the recap for ep 18. Wow…only two more episodes left of this. I wonder what will happen now.

5-Line Recap:

Valid Love (5)

1. Il Ri decides to leave the Jang residence after the scene that Kim Joon made.

Even after all the cheating and back stabbing, it’s nice that Hee Tae let Kim Joon sleep at his place and not kick him out. I wonder if that was due to him understanding that feeling of jealousy. We know that Hee Tae constantly wanted to confront Il Ri and Kim Joon when they were together, but he couldn’t do it.

I mentioned in the last episode how Kim Joon was becoming Hee Tae and the scene of Il Ri dragging her drunken lover was reminiscent of when she went to Hee Tae after he made a scene in front of Yi Ri. The only difference is that Hee Tae stopped her from doing anything this time, so no piggy back ride for Kim Joon.

This did spark a conversation between Hee Tae and Il Ri and it is the first time I’ve seen some feeling from both of them after so long. But it also reiterates what I said about Il Ri’s character. She’s the type of person who wants to feel needed, so when she said, “You don’t need me anymore” her voice broke a bit. Is this the reason why she cheated on him? We’ve seen Il Ri take care of his family, but never him. Kim Joon needed protection, but Hee Tae didn’t…is this the reason why?

Oh, and that dream from the preview…Hee Tae is the one who had it.

tvN’s Valid Love episode 17 – Kim Joon becomes Hee Tae

Update on my computer…it’s still not doing well 😦

I’m not really sure where this show is going. It seems to have strayed from the synopsis and Il Ri has unfortunately become a character who no longer makes sense. Her anger at Hee Tae, her eagerness to rush to another burden instead of solving her own issues, and the fact that it seems like she doesn’t really love Hee Tae or Kim Joon. I’m sure there might be something about her father that could tie all this together, but until my computer feels better I don’t know what it is.

There’s another thing I’m curious about too. If Hee Tae’s mom dragged Kim Joon away from his home without a jacket, how on earth did he have it on when he ran into Il Ri and Hee Tae?

5-Line Recap:

valid love (1)

1. Kim Joon is invited over to Hee Tae’s place, where he’s forced to act like Mr. Jang for the sake of Miss Go.

I appreciate the scenes between Hee Tae and Kim Joon, because this is a friendship that I wanted to see develop. The cheating kind of ruined it, but I do like the chemistry that the actors have. My only complaint, and I suppose it’s kind of a big one, is that it feels like the show is forcing them to be together instead of it happening naturally.

The dementia storyline came out of left field, even though there may have been a sign here and there, but it seems like its being used to force the three together instead of letting them work out their own feelings in a proper way. Instead of growing as people and maturing from the experience, the characters seem to be almost to be regressing. Instead of meaningful talks, we get pissing matches. Perhaps this is the grand scheme of things though. The dementia is meant to mirror the after effects of cheating, because no matter how strong you are you won’t feel like yourself once it all comes out.

I might be over thinking things though.

At least we got to see a more human side to the original recipe Mr. Jang. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to show that he isn’t entirely selfish. He’s hurting too, but he doesn’t know how to express it and ends up shouting with his wife over her dementia. He knows it isn’t her fault, but what’s happening is scaring him and he doesn’t know what to do about it. Hopefully this makes him appreciate his wife and what he put her through.

tvN’s Valid Love episode 16 – Kim Joon’s Milkshake brings all of Hee Tae’s girls to his yard

Still having computer problems 😦 But at least my issues aren’t as bad as what’s going on with the relationships on Valid Love.

Valid Love (2)

5 – Line Recap:

1. Il Ri has dinner at the Jang house, but before things can get comfortable Hee Tae tells her to forget everything that happened since it doesn’t concern her anymore.

I’m not too familiar with dementia, but I wonder if Hee Tae’s mom is suffering from something else as well. Is it possible to just forget one person, along with a few things here and there? She knows her husband, it’s just that she sees Kim Joon as him. And she remembers the things that her husband did, but doesn’t realize that it was done to her. I wonder how plausible that is. Not because I want to find fault with the show, but I’m simply curious about what happens when someone’s mind starts deteriorating like this.

Despite myself, I’m also feeling bad for the dad. He knows he’s a jerk and did a lot of horrible things, but I think he always thought his wife would be there so it didn’t matter. Now that she’s forgetting him, he’s starting to get frustrated, but maybe this will make him see just how badly he’s hurt her. One can only hope.

In terms of Hee Tae and Il Ri, I’m glad that he’s asked her to not be involved. She may be angry that he took back his confession and asked her to not worry about his family, but they’re no longer together and she’s with someone else. He’s also trying to remove her burden and let her live a carefree life. She may not see it that way, but he’s telling her to stay away out of whatever love he has left for her.

tvN’s Valid Love episode 15 – Kim Joon is who girls go for when they’re going through puberty

I’m not going to lie. I’m incredibly nervous about watching this episode (along with ep16) because of how the last two went. After everything that happened, I don’t want Il Ri and Hee Tae to be together because his mom is sick. And I don’t want them to be together, if Hee Tae is going to be the one who shoulders all of the blame while the show overlooks her cheating.

Not that many episodes left though, so I’m going to stick with this till the very end. I’m just nervous.

…I’m also having computer issues. 😦

5-Line Recap

1. Hee Soo wants to die and her mom is sick as well.

Hee Tae’s family looks like they’re facing another crisis on top of losing Il Ri. At this point, all I can hope for is that the writers don’t make this a means for Hee Tae and Il Ri to come together. Whether they get together or not doesn’t bother me, but if it’s done in this way then it will seem more like an obligation and less like love, which is what I think the show is going for. Plus, it will seem like whenever she gets closer to Kim Joon the more other people around her get hurt.

As for Hee Soo, it’s sad to see her say that she wants to disappear. Living in that kind of situation is bound to cause depression and when you add on the fact that she was a professional dancer, then that makes her condition all the more painful.

tvN’s Valid Love episode 14 – Il Ri really annoyed me in this episode

After the last episode, I’m nervous that Valid Love will turn into a show where the husband has to prove his love for his wife, even though she’s the one who cheated. I think the show established that Hee Tae and Il Ri had issues that they needed to work on before she cheated and I’m fine and more than happy to see them work out these issues. What I’m worried about, is if the show white washes the cheated by making it all Hee Tae’s fault. I don’t think that’s fair to him and I don’t think that’s fair to the show that the writers have made.

I really hope it doesn’t go this route.

….speak of which, it’s super late here but instead of going to sleep, I decided to watch the next episode. *sigh*

5-Line Recap:

1. The neighbour was jealous of Il Ri and Hee Tae, so when he found out there was a crack in their relationship he exploited it so they could be miserable like him.

valid love1

Then, instead of staying there and owning up to his mistakes he plans on moving and finding the next couple he can mess with. Okay, maybe that part isn’t true, but he does want to move away and it only happened after the mess with Hee Tae and Il Ri came out. I don’t know about you, but this seems pretty cowardly of him. I mean, it’s one thing to be jealous of someone else’s happiness when your world has fallen apart, but it’s another to actively try to ruin it. All because of jealousy?

I don’t know how I feel about that. He was hardly on the show in the first place and now that he’s moving, he just seemed like an extra character that was used to push the story forward instead of feeling like a real person. I wonder if we’ll ever see him again.

I suppose I should talk about Hee Tae and Il Ri. The reason why she didn’t want to come back home with him was because she feels like nothing would change. Hee Tae would still feel angry and disappointed with her and remember what she did. He says that he’ll forgive her, no, that he forgives her but that isn’t enough because of the hurt that she feels. Since he doesn’t understand it, she won’t go home with him.

You probably can’t see (hopefully you can’t as that would be creepy) but I’m shaking my head at this scene. Hee Tae is meant to change so that he can understand her pain and become a better man because of it, but not once did Il Ri understand what she put him through. She did say that she would try to find out the reason why, but that’s not really anything to go by.

The couple’s problem was that they don’t communicate, but that’s a two way street. Why are we only seeing it from Il Ri’s side?

tvN’s Valid Love episode 13 – all I wanted is a bromance…

Some interesting things that I’ve been hearing some people say about the show. I know there is a strong divide between those who love Kim Joon and those who feel like Il Ri is in the wrong (unfortunately for him, there’s not really a vocal group for Hee Tae at this time). However, one thing that I’ve read on different commenting sites is that Hee Tae is unreasonable because Il Ri didn’t even cheat on him. So for him to jump to divorce is stupid.

I understand this view, but I disagree with it. Il Ri did cheat, because she actively pursued a man who wasn’t her husband. She kissed him and placed herself in situations where she was alone with him. In the end, she ended up falling for him. Emotionally, she was having an affair with Kim Joon. And physically, she was close to it. If she did sleep with him and their relationship was purely physical, then Hee Tae wouldn’t be so angry and hurt right now. But the fact that she gave half of her heart away to another man is what kills him.

If my significant other told me what Il Ri told Hee Tae, then I’d be devastated. I think by saying that Il Ri didn’t cheat is downplaying her role in the destruction of her marriage. She was wrong, even though it may have felt right and the moment she started developing these feelings she should have just left Hee Tae. But she didn’t. She chose to have her cake and eat it too and that’s why I feel like she cheated.

….enough about that, let’s just talk about episode 13, which incidentally, is my favourite number so I’m expecting good to happen here.

valid love1

5-Line Recap

1. Kim Joon is Hee Tae’s hoobae.

The bromance lives! Okay, maybe not, but Hee Tae did call Kim Joon his hoobae…and okay, he said it so he could steer the conversation away from how Kim Joon and Il Ri are related….and okay, maybe he said it to steer the conversation away to protect Il Ri. But I’m going to believe that this is the new start of their bromance.

Il Ri’s mother isn’t happy with Kim Joon being there and smacks Il Ri and him a few times to get her point across. Even though our little Carpenter is feeling jealous of Hee Tae and isn’t a bad guy, I do think he overstepped the boundaries here. Calling Il Ri’s mom, mom is insulting and insensitive at this point since she views him as someone who ruined her kid’s life. If he wanted to win her over, this wasn’t the way to do it especially when Hee Tae is in front of her.

If both stay there, then there might be another fight. So Il Ri sends them both away. Only, their cars have been towed, so they have no choice but to spend some more time together as they get their cars back. Then Hee Tae’s car doesn’t start, so they have to spend even more time together.

Yay!

tvN’s Valid Love episode 12 – Hee Soo is finally able to poop

5-Line Recap:

1. Kim Joon asks Il Ri out on a date.

I thought Il Ri turned back and that’s why Kim Joon looked so hopefully at the end of the last episode. Instead, he calls Il Ri out and busts out that question. There’s a bit of a boyish charm to it that’s cute to see. Il Ri shoots him down though and even mentions Hee Tae while doing it. Make sense. Even though she loves Kim Joon, she loves Hee Tae and is still hurt by their break-up. Feelings of guilt and loss would make anyone not want to jump into a new relationship. I know a lot of people want to see them together, but if they do happen it needs to be gradual. Il Ri has some feelings that she needs to get through and going into a relationship so soon would only hurt it.

Kim Joon does say that he’ll do what he wants and tells Il Ri to do what she wants, while he does the kabe-don technique to her. No hammer this time though. But Il Ri’s little sister makes an appearance.

Side point – If you’ve been reading my recaps, you’d notice that the only sibling that I talk about is Hee Soo. Il Ri’s younger sister and Hee Tae’s younger brother both annoy me, so I really don’t like it when they’re on my screen. Hee Tae’s brother is lazy and seems to only have that setting, while Il Ri’s sister is always angry. They might be okay when they’re with other people, but most of the time they’re together and it ends up being my least favourite scenes of the show.

That being said, their scene together as they were putting the food in Hee Tae’s fridge was the only scene of theirs that I liked.

tvN’s Valid Love episode 11 – Hee Soo is constipated

I wonder how many episodes Valid Love is expected to have? At 11 episodes, most Kdramas are nearing the end and yet it feels like we’re only at the halfway mark here. Not knowing makes me slightly nervous, because I don’t know if this will get a rushed ending or if the writers have enough time to finish the story the way they want it to. If anyone knows how many episodes are left, let me know!

5-Line Recap:

1. Stuff happens, but minimum wage in Korea is 4.70 per hour!

That’s kind of crazy, considering the cost of living in Korea is quite high. 4.70 is pretty much peanuts. I wonder how taxes are there, because right now I’m looking at this from a Canadian perspective and it’s not pretty. Hopefully their tax rates are low, because if it isn’t and the cost of living is high, then a lot of people are probably struggling just to make ends meet.

valid love4

As for the show, Il Ri says that she’s the guardian of Kim Joon and Hee Tae. She’s showing a bit more backbone here, but I think she needs to if she wants to have a proper conversation with Hee Tae. So she takes both of them to XYZ cafe so they can all talk. The entire scene is awkward, because Il Ri is letting it all out which makes both men uncomfortable. A husband doesn’t want to hear that their wife had feelings for someone else. And the other man doesn’t want to hear that their relationship was just a moment of excitement and not as important as the love she has for her husband. Ouch.

She also tells Hee Tae that she never slept with Kim Joon, but that was never the problem. At least I don’t think so. If she did and it was just a fling, I think Hee Tae would have been angry but not as angry as he is now. The fact that she fell for Kim Joon is what’s causing the most pain.

When he asks her if the situation was reversed, would she have tried to understand? She replies that she may have been even more tormented, but she’d try to understand at least once. Easier said than done, but at least she got Hee Tae to consider doing just that.

Kim Joon then brings up her words again, because the entire conversation was putting down her relationship with him so obviously he’s going to get hurt by it too. I don’t think this was her intention, but I think at this point we all know that Il Ri lays everything out even when she shouldn’t. He tells her to give all of her heart to Hee Tae, because he doesn’t want half of it and then leaves. He does have a point though. What was the point of having him there, if this was a conversation between Hee Tae and Il Ri?
