Fall Anime Rundown part 1

I’m just going to mention the shows that are not continuing on in the next season. So just shows that started and finished in the fall seasons, or finished in the fall season.

Amagi Brillant Park – stopped watching, but not sure why

I think I watched three-four episodes of this and then never went back to it again. I don’t think anything was wrong with it, but it didn’t really do anything for me. Maybe I’ll get back to it and finish it one of these days, but for now it’s on hold.

Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai – Will eventually finish it

I watched until episode seven and while I was interested in the mystery aspect, I never got around to finishing this anime. Whenever I’d see a new episode, I’d acknowledge it but then do something else. I do only have a few episodes left though, so I’ll probably finish this within the next few days and then update my thoughts on it.

Denki-Gai no Honya-san – DNF

I thought I’d like this one a lot, especially since the characters are an eccentric bunch that work at a manga shop, but didn’t like this at all. Some parts are funny, but a lot of the jokes seemed forced.

Donten ni Warau – Now that it’s done, I guess it’s time to watch it

I still haven’t seen this one yet, mainly because I didn’t want to wait a week to see what happened next. Now that it’s done, it’s time to buckle down and watch it. I’m looking forward to it. Will update this once I’ve finished watching everything.

Gugure! Kokkuri-san – top pick of the fall season

Definitely part of my top three fall anime shows. I love that it doesn’t take itself so seriously and the characters were always fun to watch. Plus, I’ve developed such a crush on Shigaraki. He may be an alcoholic deadbeat, but he’s awesome. I kind of wish we got to see more of Tengu, since he was shown in the promotional photo, but considering how he’s a proud pedo I guess it’s okay that they confined him into such a small role.

Loved this show though. It hit all the right notes and I was never disappointed. If only there were more episodes!

Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de – the synopsis and promo picture lied to me

Here’s my problem with this show. If the synopsis and promo picture didn’t emphasis the superpower aspect of the show, I think I might have enjoyed this more. But they did, and so I kept expecting something awesome and it never really happened. In the end, it was just your generic run of the mill club room slice of life show. The powers that they got served no purpose, so much so that if you removed it from the plot only two, maybe three episodes would take a hit. Plus, my favourite girl got pushed to the side when she seemed like someone with huge potential. The harem takeover was a bit much, but I did enjoy it enough to finish it. Hatoko’s freak out is definitely a must watch though.

Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu. – a parody show that understands that it’s a parody show

A parody show about fetishes. I shouldn’t like it and yet I did, even when the animation took a nose dive for episodes 8 and 9. The show doesn’t take itself seriously and some of the moments are just too silly that I can’t help but like it. The fact that Souji had a conversation with his twintail, who sounds like an old man, and regained his confidence after that pep talk was hilarious. It’s a fun show, as long as you don’t think too hard about it.

Psycho-Pass 2 – a disappointing sequel

As a standalone series, it was fine. But as a sequel, it fails to live up to its potential. By the time I finished this I was left feeling disappointed. I think the problem here is that a lot of the stuff that was established in the first seasons gets thrown out the window for reasons unknown. The Sybil system always had its issues, we knew that from when it failed to kill Makishima, but at least it was rational. For the most part. Here, it just seemed overly evil just to prove Kamui’s point. Only, what was his point exactly?

It doesn’t matter anymore, since the ending did a hard reset just in time for the movie release. Hopefully Gin actually has something to do there, because he did nothing here. There was one moment that I did find it funny. In the last episode Akane said, “You’re under arrest” to two people and they both ended up dying.

Selector Spread WIXOSS – a great addition to the series

Fantastic! This is what a sequel should be like. There are some plot holes, but I still loved every moment of this show.

Sword Art Online II – GGO, good. Calibur, meh. Mother’s Rosario, needed more episodes

I quite liked GGO and the character of Sinon. The idea of players from SAO’s murder guild coming back and killing people in real life actually makes a lot of sense. It does say something that they never got therapy, but what can you do. The Calibur arc was okay. Mother’s Rosario could have been better. Some of it was good, but some of it really needed more episodes to develop its story. After complaining that she got shafted since the second arc of the series, I was glad that Asuna actually had her own storyline.

Terra Formars – the manga is good

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. The manga is so good, so when I heard that this would get an anime I was all for it. Only, the studio decided to focus more on action than the characters and plot. The Adolf arc was the turning point though and it was brilliant. Even though the animation took a hit, the emotions and story that Adolf shared was great to watch. The last episode was lazy though. Overall, it was just okay. Definitely read the manga though. It is amazing!

Fall Anime thoughts part 1

It’s been about two-three episodes so far for the 2014 fall anime season and after watching a few of them here are my thoughts thus far for some of the animes.

As for recaps, you’ll probably notice I haven’t done a lot of them so far. My rule is that I give animes 3 episodes before deciding whether I want to continue recapping them. This is only because I don’t want to start something and then stop because I got bored or hated the show. I want to continue on till the bitter end. Recaps should start popping up a lot more now though.

In any case, here is my Fall Anime Thoughts – Part One

  • Terra Formars

Four episodes have come and gone and while I won’t complain about the censorship, because it is expected even if it’s annoying, I still have an issue with the adaptation. It did seem like it was going in the right direction with episode four though, so hopefully the remaining episodes follow this trend and get increasingly better

Verdict: I’ve already started the recaps for this, so I’ll be watching it till the end. Not so much because of the anime, but because I’m a huge fan of the manga and want to see this do well.

  • Denki-gai no Honya-san

I thought the first episode was alright, I didn’t like the second and the third was back to okay. I think my problem with this show is that it’s very hit or miss with me. There are parts that I like, but many more that I don’t. There’s also a lot of romance here, especially the last two episodes with the pairings. Not that I mind, but I thought it was just a slice of life anime about people who work at a manga shop. Kind of like Working! but for an Otaku crowd, only it isn’t. I dunno. I keep expecting one thing and getting something completely different.

Verdict: I want to like this, especially since I like the Director and his trollish ways, but it’s not doing anything for me. I’ll give it another episode before I decide whether to continue this or not. I do have a feeling like I’ll drop it though. I’m in the minority about my views on this though.

  • Orenchi no Furo Jijo

Since it’s only a four minute anime, it’s no surprise that they’ve cut a lot of stuff from the manga. Unlike Terra Formars where I felt annoyed by this, I don’t mind it here because the basic story still remains. It’s cute, lighthearted, and fun.

  • Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken

It does make me laugh, but a lot of the references go over my head.

Verdict: Seeing as how Orenchi and Danna are both short animes, I think I’ll stick with it till the end. Might do a recap on this, but the two would be together. Kind of like a Bite-Sized Recap or something. I need to think of a better name for it. Chibi Recaps? 4minute recaps? Bubble Pop Recaps? I’ll have to think this one through.

  • Karen Senki

The first three episodes were not good. The animation was nice for a CG anime, but there was no story. Technically, there still isn’t much of a story, but at least with the fourth episode we got to see more of the world and the other characters instead of just seeing Karen fight robots all the time.

Verdict: Even though I don’t like this all that much, the fourth episode did lessen those feelings. I do feel like something crazy will happen, so I want to watch to see what it is and I do like the Elevens. Karen, not so much, but the Elevens are awesome. I’ve already started doing recaps for this and since it’s short (but feels long!) it’s not like I’m wasting a lot of time on it.

  • Selector Spread WIXOSS

My weekly fix of seeing girls suffer and get trolled is back….plus I like the story and characters. Now that Tama is back and in Aki-lovely’s hands, I wonder what’s going to happen.

Verdict: I loved the first season, so I’ll be sticking with this till the end. I’ll probably start doing recaps for this with the next episode.

  • Gugure! Kokkuri-san

I love this! Kohina is cute and I want to see her stop being a doll. The ghosts haunting her are funny, but also kind of creepy too. I mean, Kokkuri stalked her and Inugami wants to marry her. With the Tanuki, it looks like she has another weirdo to add to the ever growing list. Unlike the previous two, he seems more like a deadbeat loser. Basically, I love this.

Verdict: I love this. Recaps will happen with the next episode. Did I mention that I love this?

  • Donten ni Warau

I was super hyped for this and yet I haven’t seen an episode yet. Does this mean that I don’t want to watch this? No. Does this mean that it looks bad so I want to avoid it? No. Do I have too much animes to watch and mistakenly didn’t watch this one? No. Am I just lazy? Maybe, but no. For some reason, I have this desire to watch all of the episodes in one go instead of waiting every week. To me, it seems like an anime you power through and not wait for.

Verdict: Once the final episode comes out, I’ll watch this in its entirety. Till then, it’s on hold.

More thoughts to come!

First Impressions: Three in One

I feel like I should give each one its own post, especially Selector Spread WIXOSS, but I don’t have time for that so here’s three first impressions on Denki-gai no Honya-san, Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken and Selector Spread WIXOSS.

Denki-gai no Honya-san

Denki-gai no Honya-san

The first scene when Sensei falls asleep and goes into the shrink wrap machine, only for her to wake up and realize that she’s dreaming made me laugh. I’ve been there and had similar hallucinations. I probably shouldn’t mention that, but oh well.

That scene, along with maybe two other ones, were the only scenes that I laughed at. Might give this another two episodes before deciding whether to continue or not. I do like some of the characters like the Director though. Maybe the more we see of the employees, the better I’ll like it.

Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken

Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken (I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying)

Seems over the top, but the wedding ceremony was funny and some of the stuff held my attention. I’m jealous of the husband though. Making a living by blogging about animes. If only that could happen in my life. I feel the same way about working as he does.

Is it weird that I relate more to the otaku husband who is male, when I’m female? What does that say about me…..I wonder if I ever get married, will I be the same way with my husband? This is only a comedy anime, a short one at three minutes at that, but it’s seriously making me question my life at the moment.

Seeing as the anime is only three minutes long, I don’t see myself dropping this as long as it doesn’t become too stupid or too ecchi.

Selector Spread WIXOSS

Selector Spread WIXOSS

Spoilers from the first season will be mentioned here. If you haven’t watched the first season, then read at your own risk. But seriously, watch the first season. It’s great!

I’m glad this is back on. Watching these girls have so much hope in their wishes coming true, only for it to turn against them…it fills my heart with such happiness. I still don’t think their situation is as crappy as what happens to the girls in Madoka, but it’s still fun to watch.

The second season takes place two seasons after the first. Ruko is still dealing with the fact that Tama disappeared and Iona took her place. We get a lot of flashbacks in this episode and some appearances from girls from the first season.

It’s nice to see Ruko and Hitoe together, but it was a little weird for me because Hitoe’s wish got tainted in the first season. She wasn’t even able to touch Ruko and the others, but now she can freely talk about her friends and be a shoulder for Ruko. What happened here?

Aki-lucky is in the next episode and she looks fine, so I wonder what happened to her tainted wish too. I suppose it did though, since Iona is now with Ruko, so she can’t take down someone who is no longer there. Maybe that’s what the next episode is alluding too?

I do like the contrast of Iona with Ruko compared to Ruku with Tama. Tama was naive and playful, but Iona freely taunts her. I love it. I want to see Ruko and Iona together in battle. I don’t think Ruko will be as happy as before, but the two of them should be a powerful duo.
