Recap: Sword Art Online II ep 15

New Arc time!

Is it just me, or does Asuna look really weird here. Like she belongs in Shin Sekai Yori…….maybe it’s just me.

Unlike the previous three arcs where it was a matter of life or death, the short arc of Calibur is about gaming. The crew get together in order to get the legendary weapon in ALO, Excalibur.

Before that though we get to see Asuna in a bath. Naked……..SAO, I didn’t think you’d do this to Asuna, especially when you think of how she’s been treated for the last two arcs. But since they did get some T&A from her, I guess this means that Kirito won’t be getting a new girl to add to his harem in this short arc.

Yes, I realize that isn’t Asuna, but Sinon also got a moment to shine as Kirito grabbed her tail. Asuna doesn’t say anything though. Speaking of Asuna and Sinon, I was waiting for the moment when Sinon would find out that Kirito has a waifu. It never came and they completely skipped over it. I wanted to see her face when the reveal happened. Suguha was devastated when she found out that Kirito was her big brother, but we never got that with Sinon.

The group of seven, which includes Kirito, Suguha/Leafa, Asuna, Klein, Liz, Silica, and Sinon, head over to ALO and try to get the legendary sword of Excalibur. The mission for it is pretty normal in terms of games, but it seems like this is even a bigger deal than before. If Kirito and his merry women (and Klein) don’t find Excalibur, then the King of the Frost Giants who rules Niflheim will go after Alfheim and take over.

Normally, when something like this is about to happen the game producers will give a week’s notice, especially when it’s this huge. This has the makings of an all out war, which actually sounds pretty awesome. But it looks like the game makers didn’t plan for this and the Queen that popped out to give the mission was an AI and not the regular quest person.

In the end, the quest was accepted and the crew go out to find Excalibur and save ALO from a horrible take over.

I think for some, they may not like this arc because it is a bit more lighthearted and game related compared to the previous three. I mean, at the end of the day it’s just a sword and even if the King of the Frost Giants and his men go after ALO, then all of the players would come out and have fun defending their ‘home.’ I would imagine that would be fun and incredibly exciting for all of the players.

Other than that, not much happened. This episode was mainly an introduction to the Calibur arc and to show all of the characters together again. Only two more episodes after this before we get into the Mother’s Rosario one.

Side note: Kayaba made an appearance in the OP. I don’t know if that means anything or if he’s involved with the AI Queen and the King of the Frost Giants, but I was happen to see him. He’s a mass murderer, but his reasons for doing so always makes me laugh.

I watch this season in ‘batches’ of 8 episodes each (I simply hate waiting a week for another episode so I tend to avoid ‘currently airing’ series, but for SAO I made an exception because I really really liked it) and my brother told me about this – yesterday actually – and I was a little outraged at the whole Excalibur thingy. I know it sounds unreasonable of me, but in my little world, the Excalibur belongs only to Saber (from the Fate franchise) and nobody else (in the world of anime, I mean) so this freaked me out and even know, I still have a hard time accepting it… *sigh* at least I hope they don’t ruin the anime O.o

It’s only for three episodes, so don’t worry. Plus, I’ve heard a lot of great things about the next arc, since it’s all about Asuna. So even if you don’t like the Excalibur talk here it’s only going to happen for two more episodes and then move on to something else.

I think it’s because nothing really happened here. The guys just went into ALO and got a quest. It’s similar to how most games are kind of boring in the beginning while you hear all of the introduction and the mission info, but as you continue it gets exciting…I’m not sure if that will happen here, but it’s only a three episode arc so it will be over soon.
